今回はデザイナーの小室真以人と
父、小室容久を中心に制作の背景や思いなどを取材いただいています。

TOKYO FASHION EXPRESS「NIPPON STYLE」
“Father and son who are captivated by the colors of the forest”

Dye master Yasuhisa Komuro and dyer/designer Maito
Natural dyeing has been handed down since ancient times in Japan. The technique is appealing for the complex hues unlike synthetic dyes and the fact that the naturally-derived ingredients are safe for children to put them in their mouths. Dye master Yasuhisa Komuro used to be an advertising photographer. He was struck by the earthy beauty of naturally-dyed fabric and clothes he happened to see on location, and decided to live as a dyer about 20 years ago. Yasuhisa’s son Maito is his rival. He started helping his father when he was in elementary school and after studying dyeing and weaving at Tokyo University of the Arts, he trained at his father’s workshop. He struck out on his own 3 years ago and opened his own studio in Tokyo. The materials he dyes also defy the traditional image.

In the woods of Chikugo and around Kyushu, Yasuhisa continues his quest for colors that inspire him. He creates colors from a wide variety of plants including madder, indigo, red bayberry, mulberry, pomegranate and Yakusugi. Especially popular is his sakura dye derived from the cherry tree. Using the same natural dye, Maito creates a world that is different from that of his father and master. The program focuses on the father-son rivals as they make clothes in forest colors.
