Weaving, Sewing, Finishing

Japan has many amazing makers.
In the textile industry—often referred to as the world of ito-hen (the kanji for “thread”)—each role is traditionally specialized. Dyers, spinners, finishers, knitters, weavers, and sewers have long supported one another through a system of division of labor.through a system of division of labor.

Our products, too, are made possible thanks to the skills and dedication of craftspeoplefrom all across Japan.

Spinning yarn in Ichinomiya, weaving stoles in Kyoto, crafting canvas in Kurashiki, embroidering in Kiryu, knitting socks in Saga, and sewing bags in Asakusa—

Each piece carries the refined techniques and heartfelt intentions of its maker.

True Natural Dyeing
Only with the Colors of Nature

In Japanese, many traditional color names are derived from plants. This reflects a long-standing admiration for the colors found in nature—those of plants, minerals, and animals.

A longing to capture those beautiful colors.

That desire is what gave rise to the techniques of natural dyeing, which have been handed down for generations.

Today, synthetic dyes are widely used. They are less costly than natural dyeing and appealing from a production standpoint. However, synthetic dyes can contain heavy metals or chemicals that may be harmful to people and the environment. In contrast, natural dye—being made entirely from nature—can be considered inherently safe and beautiful for both people and the planet.
At MAITO, our knitwear begins with translating the colors of plants into materials through our own hands.
